As many of you know, Dezmin graduates from high school in June of 2018. He will begin his college journey this Fall at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. His hard work in high school earned him LMU’s Presidential Scholarship, which reduces the cost of his college eduction by half.
Dezmin was enrolled in the engineering pathway at McBride High School, where he earned a 4.5 GPA and became a member of the National Honor Society. In his sophomore year, he established and was president of the school’s first National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) chapter. He also participated in, and eventually became a youth leader with, the California Conference for Equality and Justice (CCEJ) Building Bridges Camp, where he facilitated dialogue between high school students from across California and helped them to deepen their understanding of social justice and equality. On May 17, 2018, CCEJ recognized Dezmin as Youth Humanitarian of the Year and presented him with the Henry Meyer Youth Award. A local newspaper, the Press Telegram, ran a short story about the CCEJ event and other award recipients.
At LMU, Dezmin will major in business and minor in psychology. He wants to continue his work with CCEJ and find ways to contribute to his community. His ultimate goal is to become a consumer psychologist, earn an MBA, and open his own consulting firm.
As you can see, Dezmin has been working hard at his academic success. Our goal is to reduce or totally eliminate the remaining costs associated with his education. To that end, we have worked with Dez to find and apply to a number of scholarships and internship opportunities. While we know that these opportunities can go a long way toward helping us reach our goal, they aren’t guaranteed.
We invite you to partner with us. Consider making a donation to help fund Dezmin’s higher education. No amount is too small — no amount is too large. One hundred percent of your contribution will go directly to Dezmin and help cover costs related to his schooling.
Thank you for your support and for cheering him on as he embarks on this new chapter in his life.
